How Therapy Works

A gentle process, shaped around you

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially if you’re unsure what to expect or worried about saying the “wrong” thing. This page is here to offer clarity and reassurance.

Therapy isn’t about having all the answers or fixing yourself. It’s a supportive process where we take things slowly, build trust, and explore what’s coming up for you at a pace that feels safe.

The First Step: Getting Started

Before committing to therapy, you’re invited to book a free consultation.

This is a relaxed, informal conversation where you can:

  • Ask any questions you may have

  • Share a little about what’s brought you here

  • Get a feel for how I work

  • Decide whether it feels like the right fit for you

There’s no pressure to continue after this conversation. Feeling comfortable and supported is essential.

Your First Session

Your first session is about getting to know you.

We’ll gently explore what’s been happening in your life, what you’re finding difficult, and what you’re hoping therapy might support you with. You don’t need to share your full story straight away - we’ll move at a pace that feels right for you.

You’re welcome to:

  • Take pauses

  • Sit with silence

  • Change direction

  • Share only what feels safe

There is no expectation to talk about anything you’re not ready to explore.

Ongoing Sessions

As therapy continues, sessions become a steady space in your week where you can check in with yourself and reflect on what’s unfolding.

Some sessions may involve:

  • Talking through current challenges or emotions

  • Exploring patterns in thoughts, feelings, or relationships

  • Gently reflecting on past experiences when appropriate

  • Learning grounding tools to support your nervous system

Other sessions may feel quieter or more reflective. Both are part of the process.

Moving at Your Pace

Therapy doesn’t follow a fixed timeline.

Some people come for short-term support around a specific issue, while others choose longer-term therapy to explore deeper patterns. We’ll regularly check in together to ensure therapy continues to feel supportive and aligned with your needs.

You are always in control of:

  • What we talk about

  • How quickly we go

  • When you feel ready to pause or end therapy

What Therapy Can Feel Like

Clients often describe therapy as:

  • A relief

  • A place to finally slow down

  • A space where they feel heard and understood

  • A gentle anchor during difficult times

While therapy can sometimes bring up difficult emotions, it is always approached with care, compassion, and support.
